1. Summernats

Start your engines people – Summernats is back in all its glory. If you love the sound of burning rubber, the sight of vehicles disappearing under eye-watering billows of smoke and a side of oily fingerprints with your fries, then Summernats is definitely for you. Summernats is Canberra’s annual car festival bringing together petrol-head enthusiasts to showcase and show off their custom made street machines. The program includes a street parade, a judging competition for the Summernats Street Machine Grand Champion, a ‘car audio soundoff’, a plethora of auto industry retailers and plenty of family-friendly activities to keep the kids entertained. And that’s not all – the high-octane atmosphere continues across the festival with Australia’s hottest bands, fireworks, donuts galore, a drive-in-movie and nightly entertainment. Phew – did you get all that? Summernats kicks off on 5 January – for full details and program information check out the Summernats website.

2. Be – don’t do. Chillax at Ben and Jerry’s Openair Cinema

If you were the one stuffing the turkey, wrapping the presents and generally running around like a blue-arsed fly this Christmas, then you need to treat yourself my friend. Get down to Ben and Jerry’s open air cinema on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin and get horizontal for a movie of your choice. And you don’t have to slum it with the plebs daaahhlink – book yourself into the Star Lounge or Polo Class – you deserve this. Pre-movie indulgence is what it’s all about so grab yourself a glass of sparkling, a snack and lie back and enjoy the summer vibe. Not only that, on Sundays it gets even better with free ice-cream, games on the lawn, live music as well as the movie – what’s not to like? So find your inner child and jump into the Sundae Sessions – it all kicks off on 12 January with full details on Ben and Jerry’s website.

3. They’re baacccckk – the Old Bus Depot Markets

Ok so the way to be less-stressed next Christmas is to start preparing for it right now – I’m not kidding. If you have any spare cash left then get thee to the sales and the markets. The Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston will be back trading from 8 January so why not race down and pick yourself up a bargain. If you buy one present every week, you’ll be done by April – how amazing would that be? The best thing about the OBDM is the creativity on display from some of Canberra’s best artists and designers – I mean how could you not love this. Even better is the proximity to the Kingston Foreshore. When you’re done with the markets you can collapse with a caffeine hit (or something stronger if you really need it) and give yourself a pat on the back for being the first one to Christmas shop in January. It’s completely sensible right?

So tell me about you – what’s on your January ‘to do list’?
